Many thanks for your comment in the Grey Panthers Guest Book. Matthew Bendelow was a truly extraordinary man, and I'm hoping that my article in The Green Howard will help make more people aware of his achievements. He may not have been great in terms of history or politics, but not many people nowadays would have had his strength, tenacity, and courage.
The Grey Panthers have done a couple of walks recently in the Bowes area, and it really CAN be rugged country. Each winter, the main A66 road between Bowes and Brough is regularly having to be closed due to the weather. Walk the "Matthew Bendelow Memorial Walk" and one can appreciate his achievements even more.
