Explorer Map 306 - Middlesbrough & Hartlepool

A very straightforward walk, following the Castle Eden Walkway for much of the route, but also using clearly defined footpaths and farm tracks.
There are no gradients and the surface walked on is firm for almost the entire way.
This is a gentle walk for any time of the year, but highly enjoyable nonetheless

A map of the route followed has been plotted on the Ordinance Survey mapping website, By selecting the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances and heights marked on the route.

There is a small car park off the A689 (on the North side) where the Castle Eden Walkway crosses the A689.
(NZ40483 28440).
From this car park, follow the signposted Castle Eden Walkway (a disused railway track bed) North for almost 3 miles.
Just before a bridge that crosses the Elwick - Trimdon road, a footpath on the left descends to meet this road.
Walk along the road for a short distance (But CARE, - TRAFFIC) until you come to a gated lane on your right.
Follow this lane to the point where you turn right to cross a footbridge over the reservoir.
On the other side of the footbridge, follow the lane to the right, then back up to the Castle Eden Walkway.
Now head South along the walkway. to return to your startin point.
However, almost at the end of the Walkway there is a footpath which takes you up to the Durham Gateway pedestrain bridge. You may want to visit this bridge for its views towards Wynyard and Teesside.
Return to the car park by a footpath from this bridge.
