Explorer Map OL26 - North York Moors (Western Area)

A circuit of a popular part of the North York Moors, taking in views of Roseberry Topping and from the Hanging Stone.
From the view point overlooking Roseberry Topping the walk could be extended to visit Roseberry Topping itself.
And, of course, from the car park at Gribdale Gate there is a popular walk up to Captain Cook's Monument.

A map of the route followed has been plotted on the Ordinance Survey mapping website, By selecting the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances and heights marked on the route.

Start from the car park at Gribdale Gate (used to access Captain Cook's Monument). NZ592 110.
Take the footpath Northwards towards Great Ayton Moor, initially climbing up a series of steps that have been cut into the sides of the slope. These steps are uneven and can be muddy (and slippery).
Head Northwards until at NZ587 127 there is a gate. Here the footpath heads Westwards towards Roseberry Topping.
However, continue in a Northerly direction along the footpath to the Hanging Stone (crossing a stile about half way along)
At the Hanging Stone, take the footpath South Southwards to join the Cleveland Way footpath.
Here head East until the track turns South.
Continue along the track almost until you come to the boundary at Percy Cross Rigg.
At this point, take the track Westwards over Great Ayton Moor and continue until you come to Gribdale Gate.
