Explorer Map 308, - Durham and Sunderland
The climb up to Penshaw Monument at the start of the walk is moderately
demanding. Heavy use of the original path up to the monument has resulted
in it being replaced by steps, - concrete blocks spaced every 6ft or
so apart with the earth step in between. From the monument there is a steep descent over fields, with a log ascent
          on the return.
The majority of the walk uses easy to use footpath beside the River
Wear, or a section of a disused railway track
