At the mouth of the River Tees, on the Western side, is a beach known locally as "The Blue Lagoon". This name, obviously, is somewhat cynical.
However, this beach provides excellent opportunities for a brisk walk, and is well used by local people.
The beach is lined with sand dunes on the Western side, - these provide much pleasure for youngsters, running up and down the dunes.
There is plenty to observe from the beach, with a mass of sea birds. At the Southern end of the beach is a protected colony of Terns.
The beach not only affords a good brisk walk, but photographic opportunities also abounbd.

To reach the beach there is a car park at NZ536 281.
You cross a goilf course to get to the beach, and care is needed here.
Once at the beach you can turn left to reach the North Gare breakwater, or turn right to wak along the beach to its Southern end.
Plenty of walking at the Blue Lagoon.
