Explorer Map 304, - Darlington & Richmond

A walk that follows the Teesdale Way beside the River Tees, on a there-and-back basis. Starting from Darlington the walk takes you to High Coniscliffe and Piercebridge, returning along the same route.
Navigation is extremely straightforward, as the Teesdale Way is very well used and signposted.
For almost the entire length of the walk the path is flat, with only a small climb up to High Coniscliffe and a small climb down.
Piercebridge well repays a visit, with the ruins of a Roman fort and a Roman bridge over the river Tees. Piercebridge village Green and the village itself are very attractive.
The only note of caution is that the River Tees is not always peaceful, and the walk would be out of the question in very wet weather.

Start from the picnic area on Coniscliffe Road in Darlington, near the pumping station (NZ25914 13812).
Head Westwards along Coniscliffe Road.
Just before the Baydale Beck Inn there is a gap in the hedge with a small stile. This leads you on a footpath to Low Coniscliffe>
Once in the village continue along the street for 30 - 40 yards, until you a finger post on your left indicating the Teesdale Way.
Now follow the very obvious Teesdale Way track all the way to High Coniscliffe. Simply keep the River Tees on your left all the way.
In High Coniscliffe, walk Westwards through the village. Continue until you are past the last house in the village.
On your left, slightly hidden, is a track that heads downhill through some woodland.
Follow this track and footpath until you come to Piercebridge.
After visiting the Roman ruins and the village Green, return the way you came.
