The Grey Panthers

This walk takes in some attractive villages and field footpaths on the outward leg, returning along the cliff top paths of the Cleveland Way. At the half way point the village of Robin Hood's Bay is visited.
The village is a well-known tourist / visitor hot spot, having narrow streets full of picturesque cottages. Being a seaside village, there are opportunities for fish and chips, as well as ice creams.
Navigation is reasonably straightforward on the outward leg, and very straightforward on the return leg, though it does help to have a 1 : 25K OS map to check on field boundaries.
There are some fairly steep gradients in places. The village of Robin Hood's Bay has streets that are surprisingly steep.

Start from a lay-by beside the main A171 road, as you enter Hawsker (NZ92499 07709). This lay-by, in turn, is beside a small village green.
Head South Westwards along the road towards Sneatonthorpe. Although the road is quiet and carries little traffic, you still need to take care.
At NZ918 067 you will find Hawsker Intake Road (a country lane) on your left. Follow the lane until it ends, then turn left along the edge of the field until you come to Fern Farm.
Here take the footpath to cross the A171 road, and continue along the field footpath to join a minor road that takes you into the hamlet of Raw.
Continue on the field footpath and then green lane to the village of Fylingthorpe.
Here head Southwards to Middlewood Lane and continue to Mark Lane.
Simply follow the finger posts now to the village of Robin Hood's Bay.
At the top of the village of Robin Hood's Bay, follow finger posts that direct you to the Cleveland Way footpath.
Follow the Cleveland Way footpath until you meet the footpath, on your left, that takes you to Gnipe Howe Farm.
Continue past the farm until you arrive back in Hawsker.
