EXplorer Map 308, - Durham and Sunderland

You don't really need a map for this walk, which can be done at any time of the year, as it essentially just follows the Haswell to Hart Country Walkway between Castle Eden and Haswell, - and then returns along the same track.
As an "optional extra" you can deviate into the village of Shotton Colliery.
The walk is almost totally flat and should pose no difficulty.
The only problem we encountered was the presence of cyclists, and unless you are alert they can come up behind you somewhat unexpectedly.

(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site, - just use QUO!!

Start from Castle Eden village (road-side parking), - NZ424374.
Follow the Haswell to Hart Country Walkway towards Wingate.
At Wingate cross the A181 at the provided crossing place.
Continue Northwards on the Walkway to Shotton Colliery. Just before Shotton Colliery there is a pedestrian crossing over Bridge Road.
Once over this crossing you can either continue straight ahead on the Walkway, or turn right in the small park to enter Shotton Colliery village itself.
On the Walkway, continue ahead for another mile or so until you come to a point where the tracks divide. Take the left hand track and follow it until you come to a farm track. Turn left and follow the farm track into Haswell village.
Here turn right and walk uphill to the Village Green.
Retrace your steps to return to Castle Eden.
