Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern Area)

A superb walk for a fine day that takes in a mix of moorland views with lush green valleys, as well as a walk beside the Wheeldale Gill and the West Beck. The latter section ends with the highlight being the Mallyan Spout waterfall. Another section of the walk take sin the "Roman Road" on Wheeldale Moor.
Although almost all of the walk is straightforward with respect to the terrain and the ease of navigation, the final section presents some REAL DIFFICULTIES.
The section which presents this difficult walking is the stretch between New Wath Farm and Mallyan Spout itself.
Here the footpath follows a route over large, sharp-edged boulders and severely eroded pathways above these rocks. To cover this section of the footpath, the walker will have to take extreme care and will need to clamber up and down these rocks, - which can be slippery when wet. We found that it took us about an hour and a half to cover one mile.
You may choose to avoid this section by taking the road back from New Wat Farm to Goathland, - though if you do that you will miss out on some spectacular scenery.

Start from the North York Moors car park (NZ83346 01377).
Walk West down Goathland's main street, then - at the junction, walk South West down the street to the parish church.
To the South West of the church, take the more Westerly track across the moors that heads South-South West to Hunt House Farm. For the most part the track is well defined, but it helps to have good visibility and to use a compass.
From Hunt House Farm take the track almost due South across Howl Moor to the Forestry plantation.
In the plantation, take the broad Forestry track that heads generally Westwards to exit the plantation at Wheeldale Bridge.
Here take the road North for a short distance, until, on your right, you see the information board for the Roman Road.
Head North North West along the Roman Road, and continue on the farm track, to reach the Wheeldale Gill.
Cross the Gill by the footbridge, then take the path past Hazel Head Woods to emerge at the Wheeldale Road.
Follow the road Eastwards and Northwards for a short distance until you come to the signposted footpath on your right that leads you to (near) Hazel Head Farm.
Continue on the farm track and then foeld footpaths to New Wath Farm and then up to the Goathland-Egton road.
Here head North for a short distance, and when you come to the road bridge over the West Beck take the signposted footpath to Mallyan Spout and Goathland.
THIS SECTION OF THE WALK CAN BE VERY DIFFICULT, - steep and slippery rocks with an almost non-existent footpath in places.
FRom Mallyan Spout, take the signposted footpath up to the Mallyan Spout Hotel, and then walk back (Eastwards) to the car park in Goathland.
