Explorer Maps Nos 302& 304 - Northallerton & Thirsk, Darlington & Richmond

A walk over reasonably flat agricultural land, making extensive use of farm footpaths.
Some of the footpaths are quite difficult to follow, with the local farmers in question making little attempt to assist the walker with footpath signs or open gates. There are also several stiles which are either in very poor repair, or are very difficult to access.
It is essential to use the 1 : 25,000 scale maps in order to be able to follow the field footpaths.
Some of the footpaths are very muddy in wet weather, and one crossed a field just outside a farmyard which was ankle deep in slurry.
Although the views are splendid and the walk overall is well worthwhile, it does take some persevereance and skill to complete.

Start from the centre of Brompton village (near the church). SE37438 96377.
Head Esatwards out of Brompton, keeping to the North side of Brompton Beck.
Follow Fullicar Lane past Lower Stobthorne Farm and then the footpath towards Stobthorne Farm.
Here you need to be following the field patterns on the 1 : 25,000 map, as the footpath veers off before Stobthorne Farm to then head Northwards to Northfield Farm.
Head through between the farm houses at Northfields Farm, and continue on the footpath to Deighton.
We found that this section of the route had NO footpath signs on it and it was essential to follow the map.
Even then we didn't take the footpath all the way to Deighton, but headed to the road one field South of Town End Fram.
Take the road to Deighton, and continue to where the road bends sharp left. Here a Bridleway sign directs you to Mankin Lane.
Follow the lane into Welbury.
Continue on the road through Welbury and on towards the level crossing at the old station.
Cross over the railway, and almost immediately take the footpath on the right through the farmyard and onwards towards Hawksnest Farm.
Continue Southwards to Harsley Castle, then take the signposted footpath Westwards back to Brompton.
