Explorer Map No 300, - Howardian Hills & Malton

This linear walk takes in flat agricultural land between the two villages of Terrington and Crayke, By starting in Terrington, the only hill of any significance between the two villages is downhill.
There are three 12th Century churches to visit at Sherif Hutton, Farlington, and Marton-in-the-Forest, - and, of course, the churches at Crayke and Terringtom nay also be visited.
The walk is a year-round walk, though would almost certainly benefit from being undertaken when the weather is bright and sunny as there are some superb views.
Although navigation is fairly straightforward, it certainly helps to have a 1:25,000 map available so that field patterns can be followed.
The walks follows the Ebor Way and the Foss Walk. Curiously, there are finger posts at "strategic" points on the route, but waymarks tended to be hidden or absent. At one point, - Cornborough Manor, the finger post points down a track rather than to the required field, which could result in a bit of a detour to get back on course. Thus, following the map rather than relying on waymarks and finfer posts is somewhat essential.

This walk can be started from either Crayke or Terrington. The description is for a walk setting out from Terrington.

Park in the main street through Terrington (SE67040 70681). Take the road that heads in a South Easterly direction (Mowthorpe Lane), and walk along this road for a few hundred yards. Past the cemetery, and a small copse, a finger post on your right directs you across a field as part of the Ebor Way.
Follow this path until it meets a track, which leads downhill to Primrose Farm.
Past Primrose Farm the Ebor Way crosses farmland in a South Westerly direction as a broad footpath.
When you come to a junction of several footpaths, the waymarks give the impression that the way forward is straight ahead down a grassy track. It isn't, - the Ebor Way continues beside a hedge line in a South Westerly direction.
When you come to the road, walk along it for a few yards, and then taken the field footpath to Sherif Hutton that is signposted on the left.
Walk Westwards along Sherif Hutton's main street (though a detour to the parish church is well worthwhile).
Cross the main road and continue through Sherif Hutton until you come to the Foss Walk footpath. We found the first few hundred yards of the footpath to be a busy dog's toilet, - so watch your step!
Where there is a junction of footpaths take the right hand one over a stile where the fence is marked "Bull in the Field".
Cross fields past Mill Hill Farm to Cornborough Manor.
Here the finger post seems to direct you downhill, down a track.
The CORRECT path is at 45 degrees to this, across fields to Upper Towthorpe Farm. Check your map.
Past this farm, take the footpath towards Farlington.
Before Black Collar Hall Farm you come to a track that leads to the road into Farlington. Follow the track and the road rather than continue trying to find the correct footpath.
In Farlington, the Foss Way continues almost opposite the church.
Rather confusingly, the Foss Way at this point seems to go through the back yard of a private house. This yard is gated off, and at the time there was a dog in the yard. However, this IS the correct footpath.
Past Farlington, the Foss Way footpath crosses fields to reach the road that passes through Marton-in-the-Forest.
At a junction, take the farm track on the right (Harryfield Lane), which takes you to Marton Abbey Farm.
Cross the road here, and take the track past Marton Park Farm which takes you all the way to Crayke.
